Fiesta in Bahia Asuncion

Our Second Home is in the small fishing village of Bahía Asunción, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Our village is located out the hook on the map of Baja.  Like all small towns, it has some negative karma hanging around, but that is  very over-shadowed by the wonderful locals who have opened their  hearts to us.  It is a wonderful place.

Knowing nothing about what we were doing, we helped the community create a web page--- a work in progress that can be viewed by following this link  ---  Bahia Asunción

It seemed appropriate to begin with with the August fiesta time; the fiesta surrounding the Dia de Asunción that embodies the religious, family and party souls of the people.   These are only a few pictures of some of the great activities that happen during that week.

There appears to be a glitch in the slideshows.  If you start a slideshow and Picassa opens, shut Picassa and the slideshow will continue.   Soon to be fixed, I hope.

The Calbagetta.  The ranchers from the area join together and ride all day to join with the priest and the Virgin from the Church to enter the town.  Then the are serenaded by bands and upon reaching the church, they receive the family blessing.  Exciting and just so very special.

The Carnival --Fun for All

All Fiestas need Royalty and that we have.  There are also the Official Bands and the wonderful local folk dancing, and then there are the impromptu bands around town---parties just happen.

The fishing tournament.  Shore fishing for all ages, and panga fishing for yellowtail and bass.  There are many prizes, but then all of fish are cooked to feed the entire town and all visitors, including the Governor of Baja California Sur.   It begins at dawn and it is a real family affair.  One of the beautiful things in Mexican culture is the inclusion of all ages in almost all events.

Horse Racing---just outside of town is the straight track defined by the same wire from which the lobster traps are made.  Wild fun ---
